Teeth Whitening Gel

Teeth whitening gel is the most important component of any teeth whitening product. It does, after all, do the actual whitening of the teeth. Therefore, to have a successful teeth whitening product you need a quality whitening gel that works. The quality of the gel depends on the quality of the ingredients used, the method of formulation and mixing, and the freshness of the gel.

The viscosity of the teeth whitening gel is very, very important. There are two types of viscosity; High Viscosity Gel and Low Viscosity Gel.

High Viscosity Gel is important because it allows the gel to stick to your teeth. This is essential to the whitening process. If a gel is not highly viscous, the whitening gel will leak out of the bottom of the bleaching trays or the ends of the whitening strips. This then slows the whitening process down and creates unneeded sensitivities. Also, saliva can dilute a low-viscosity gel, rendering it non-effective.

So to summize the best teeth whitening gel needs to be of a high viscosity - so the gel remains on the teeth throughout the teeth whitening session.

There is a choice of 2 active ingredients in teeth whitening gel;

1) Hydrogen peroxide (H202)

2) Carbamide Peroxide

Hydrogen peroxide is the most common and effective ingredient used to whiten teeth. It can be formulated directly into a gel or
added in the form of Carbamide Peroxide.

The base ingredient in teeth whitening gel can either be Glycerin or Glycol.

The strength of teeth whitening gel (the % amount of Hydrogen peroxide or Carbamide peroxide) varies between different manufacturers from 6% - 14%.

Most teeth whitening gel manufacturers can add specific ingredients to the gels to give added function these include for; Desensitizers, Photoinitiators and Hydrators.

People think that teeth whitening gel has a neutral taste, in fact the majority of gel manufacturers flavor the gel. The most popular being mint, however now manufacturers are producing weird and wonderful fruit flavors.
